Description
In the 10 years since the gamification concept was launched, individuals have navigated their way through different apps on popular mobile devices. Essentially, the goal of this project was to find little-known gamified sectors, such as tourism. This would integrate the gamification concept into the world of travel, thus motivating new users to discover the world around them.
This project was undertaken as a thesis for the academic diploma at NABA, Milan.
"Gamification is the use of game mechanics and experience design to engage and motivate individuals to achieve their goals."
The Placescout app contains geocache features which enable users to compete in the game on a worldwide scale. The user goal is to unlock in-game collectibles to climb the rankings. Each badge represents a landmark within a country and/ or region. Additionally, each location has multiple badges to be collected, enticing users to take part in the fun. Once a user reaches the landmark, Placescout will notify the user and the badge will automatically be added to their collection. The more badges you unlock from each location, the higher you climb in the rankings. Fundamentally, this renders the game more competitive, thus encouraging competition between users. Placescout is designed to motivate the user to travel and discover new places.
The Design Process
In the PlaceScout project, my design process was centered around creating an intuitive and engaging user experience. From initial research and wireframing to prototyping and visual design, each step was carefully crafted to meet user needs and business goals. By combining user insights with a clean and modern interface, I ensured a seamless journey that enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Brand Identity
There are three graphic elements to be seen in the logo: namely the compass, the location pin and the trophy, all of which come together flawlessly in the square logo. These graphic elements seamlessly create a journey that the user will follow when using Placescout. The compass sets the background, while the trophy and the pin create the foreground of the logo. The Placescout app uniquely has features that allow users to explore their location and find landmarks to unlock their trophy.
Billboards ADV
To promote Placescout, multi-subject billboards were posted advertising the app in all main Italian stations and airports in cities throughout the country. Importantly, all billboards display a QR code to download the app.
Thesis Book
This book was published to achieve the First Level Academic Diploma in NABA, Milan. Bound and printed in Milan.
